Made up of a group of small non-volcanic and uninhabited islands, the islands sit on the edge of the continental shelf of mainland Asia in the East China Sea.

Diaoyu Islands are located in the East Asia Sea, nautical miles Northeast of Taiwan and 240 nautical Southwest of the Liu Chiu Islands (Ryukyu Islands, also known as Okinawa), on the Chinese side of the Okinawa shelf (see map). The largest island is two miles long and less than a mile wide.

Its contentious status has emerged as a major issue in foreign relations between Japan and the PRC.
