BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said in a statement Friday that reports of a high dropout rate in the country's colleges and universities were incorrect.

A recent survey on college entrants' adaptability by the Beijing-based non-governmental Mycos Institute said that the dropout rate in China's colleges each academic year was 3 percent, or 500,000 in number.

But the statement by the ministry said the dropout rate is 0.75 percent on average, about 160,000 in number.

The statement said that with the electronic enrollment system and educational records database, the ministry knew the details of any changes in college students' records.

The Mycos Institute said it calculated the number based on official data released in 2008 from a seminar convened by the ministry.
