Yesterday's douchebag laowai on the train has quickly overtaken last week's British rapist to become Laowai Public Enemy #1 after netizens identified him as Oleg Vedernikov (奥列克·维捷尔尼科夫 / Олег Ветреников), the principal cellist of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra.
As major Chinese media outlets named and shamed Vedernikov, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra's official Sina Weibo page was overwhelmed by outraged microbloggers baying for blood.
The orchestra left two posts on its microblog, saying it has been on vacation since May 12, but is trying to get in touch with the cellist. It also added that the matter was being viewed by top management seriously, and that it would get down to the bottom of the matter soon. The comment feature on the microblog has now been locked up (an unwise move perhaps because microbloggers are now retweeting the post faster than ever).
An employee of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra confirmed today with a reporter from 21CN Entertainment that the man in the video was indeed their principal cellist. He added that the Russian has a very limited Chinese vocabulary and that "(Oleg) is normally very gentlemanly and doesn't drink. He would never utter such crude words at work."
According to Vedernikov's biographies on his official website and the website of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the cellist is a native of Ekaterinburg, Russia and has won multiple awards in the former Soviet Union and Italy after his graduation from the Ural State Conservatory in 1989.
