The Chinese ambassador Cheng Yonghua called in Vice Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae to lodge a formal complaint over Japanese rightists’ landing on the Diaoyu Island on August 19. Cheng said that the Diaoyu Islands are part of  China's inherent territory.

Japan should immediately stop actions that could undermine China’s territorial sovereignty so as to maintain a sound relationship of the two countries.Kenichiro Sasae rejected the complaint by Cheng and said that the Japanese rightists' landing on the islands came after the Chinese activists' move.

He also asked the Chinese government to prevent Chinese people from setting foot on the islands. Kenichiro Sasae told Cheng by telephone that the protests in China were "regrettable" and urged Chinese authorities to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of Japanese citizens there.
