Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou is planning to travel by helicopter to Pengjia Islet on September 9, local media reported on Tuesday.

Pengjia Islet is 140 kilometers away from Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. During his inspection tour, Ma will be briefed on the latest development of the islands dispute and look out to the Diaoyu Islands from Pengjia Islet.

Ma's trip has been widely viewed as Taiwan administration's official gesture of demonstrating sovereignty over the islands. Taiwan's navy and air force personnel are on the watch to protect Ma's safety.
