China's first aircraft carrier, currently named Varyag, had the side number "16" painted on both sides at a harbor in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province, on September 2.

Some foreign media suspect that the side number "16" hint the aircraft carrier to be named after a province, for example, Hubei.

The emergence of the carrier's side number also spurs speculation that the aircraft carriers is ready to be soon delivered to Chinese Navy.

Overseas military magazines reported in November that China had difficulties trying to solve a landing problem because Russia had not sold it the arresting gear necessary for the aircraft to land safely.

Asked by reporters to confirm this, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun, however, implied in a monthly press briefing on Dec. 28 that the problem had been solved. He said China "secured all major equipment of the aircraft carrier," including arresting gear, through its own research and development.

"Ukraine did not transfer the arresting gear technology to China nor took part in in developing the arresting gear" said sources with military-industrial complex of Ukraine.

Judging from the picture of the aircraft carrier, the arresting gear is similar to that of the United States, goes a foreign media guess.
