China's first aircraft carrier, currently named Varyag, will probably be named after Liaoning, a province where it was refitted, media reported.

Varyag is the Ukrainian name for the aircraft carrier, and by convention, the aircraft carrier will be renamed after its being refitted.

China first planned to name its carrier in last July, speculations of its name have since been gone wild among the Chinese public, such as Shilang, Mao Zedong, Beijing and so on.

It is only after the aircraft carrier is commissioned that the official name would be announced, according to a military source.

Names for Navy ships follow specific guidelines: cruisers are generally named after administrative provinces (regions), destroyers and frigates are named by large, medium-sized cities, submarine chasers by county, supply ships by lakes, dock landing ships, tank landings ships by mountains, minesweepers by states, and infantry landing ships by rivers.

Zheng Ming, former naval equipment and technology minister, said that he would like to suggest the Navy to use the "Yellow Sea", but was told that the naming of the aircraft carrier has been decided but, not after sea.
