Defense Ministry: Report of China building second carrier inaccurate

Chinese Ministry of National Defense on Thursday said media reports that China is developing a home-built carrier are not accurate.

The Hong Kong Mingpao newspaper reported earlier that China’s second aircraft carrier is being built on the Changxing Island of Shanghai and it is expected to be unveiled by the end of 2012.

When asked to confirm, Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said at a routine press briefing that the report is not accurate.

“We will consider building aircraft carriers based on conditions of China’s social and economic development and the needs of defense and military built-up,” He added.
