People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) conducted a drill exercising multi-type fighter jets taking off and landing on dual runways at an airport in southwest China recently. Nearly 100 fighter jets of about 10 types took part in the drill.
The Air Force command center in Chengdu Military Region commanded the drill via command information system.
Soon after the exercise started, aircraft including fighters, transport planes and helicopters began to take off and land on the dual runways orderly.
“In just 10 minutes, 12 aircraft have conducted takeoff and landing in turn on the dual runways,” a reporter at the approach tower said.
The dual runways, two runways for planes to take off and land at the same time, are the first of its kind in PLA AF airport.
“In the past, Air Force airport in China only has one runway for taking off and landing, which can only meet the demands of exercise which involves few types of fighters taking off or landing,” said Zhan Houshun, chief of the drill and also deputy commander of Air Force of Chengdu Military Region.
“Now, as the airport has dual runways, more fighters can take off and land in a short period. Besides, the runways can meet the demands of all fighters and civilian planes to take off and land,” Zhan added.
