A Chinese airplane entered air space over the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea on Thursday, a Japanese government spokesman said.

Japanese Air Self-Defense Force scrambled F-15 jets to the area after the Chinese Oceanic Administration airplane was spotted near the Diaoyu Islands at 10:06 a.m., Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters.

According to Japan’s Kyodo news report, the Japanese government immediately protested to China over the incident.

China said Thursday a flight by its maritime surveillance aircraft over islands disputed with Japan was "completely normal", after Tokyo scrambled fighter jets to respond to the situation.

"China's maritime surveillance plane flying over the Diaoyu islands is completely normal," said foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei, adding that they were "China's inherent territory since ancient times".
