Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), addressed the plenary session of the CPC's disciplinary watchdog on Jan 22.

In his speech Xi hammered home the importance of combating departmental protectionism and selfishness which entail the harmful mindset of overt compliance with covert defiance.

Orders and bans from the central government must be fully implemented, with no arbitrary alteration or distortion allowed in carrying out the policies, Xi stressed.

Equally important, an iron fist was hailed in Xi’s speech in the nationwide anti-graft campaign in a bid to overhaul the inner-Party discipline.

Both the so-called big-guns and the minnows, once breaking the laws or becoming corrupted, must be mercilessly penalized in accordance with the relevant law, Xi stated.

Xi also said the combat corruption, it is desirable to strengthen the restriction and supervision on power wielding, to tame power within the confines of system, and to build up a mechanism for disciplinary actions and penalties against corruption so as to prevent and punish crimes of the kind.

Touching on the transformation of work style, which he stressed earlier this year, Xi said whether the officials’ work style has changed for better is only assessed by the people, whose satisfaction is the only yardstick.

Transformation of work style must start well and end well, and go with both progress and success. It should be put under the supervision of both the Party and the people, and in particular, the people should be convinced seeing tangible results and substantial changes.
