China has signed an agreement to purchase four Lada-class submarines and 24 Sukhoi Su-35 fighters from Russia prior to President Xi Jinping’s visit, according to China Central Television (CCTV) on Mar 25.

It has been almost a decade since China last purchased major military equipment from Russia.

The four Amur-1650 submarines, an export version of the Lada class, will be designed and constructed jointly by the two countries before sold to Chinese navy, the report said.

The Su-35 fighter, classified as 4++ generation fighter by its manufacturer, is expected to upgrade China’s air defence capability before its own stealth fighter is formally commissioned.
