Sixteen middle-aged women, or “Dama”s in Chinese, were caught smoking drugs in a Karaoke room at Wenzhou city, Zhengjiang province in January. Three of the “Dama”s who organized the activity, were sentenced jail terms and fine on March 30.

The total number of people caught taking drugs in the KTV room was 20, the other four were men. Aged from 38 to 54, the “Dama”s were mostly full-time housewives, many had grandchildren.

The main organizer, a woman surnamed Dai, was sentenced 1 year in prison with a find of 5,000 yuan. The other accomplices were sentenced four months with 2,000 yuan fines.

They admitted that they did drugs mainly to escape from their lonely and mundane life. Most of the “Dama”s were out of work. Some of them used to be in business, but in recent years they gave up for bad economy.

Usually they just stayed at home doing nothing. Many wouldn’t get up from bed until mid-day. After lunch, they played Mahjong and went to beauty salons. In the evening they went out for drinking and Karaoke, before going home and watching TV until early morning the next day.

On a birthday party in 2014, someone brought out some drugs and asked everybody to taste. Since then drugs had been a must for their gatherings.
