People flocked to the swimming gym for relieving summer heat in Nanjing July 3, 2005. The maximum temperature that day reached 38 Celsius and there were so many people that each person can only get a foothold in the swimming pool.

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- High temperature which has plagued the southern part of China for days, is expected to hit more places on Monday, the China Meteorological Observatory said Sunday.

High temperature up to 37 degrees Celsius is predicted in many places in the south on Monday, when it might climb up to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces in the east, part of Hebei Province in the north and Turpan Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest.

The Observatory has been issuing an index of power demand under high temperature to help the affected areas better cope with the situation.

The index in the above-mentioned areas is grade four, indicating huge demand for power supply. The areas are advised to well arrange electricity consumption for production and life, and to guard against fire.

According to the municipal meteorological observatory, the temperature in Shanghai reached 39 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the highest in the same period in 70 years. The high temperature has plagued national economic powerhouse for nine days.
