Trial train starts test on Qinghai-Tibet railway

A trial train of Qinghai-Tibet (Golmud-Lhasa) railway stops near the peak symbol of Kunlun Mountain Pass at 4,767 meters (1,573 feet) of altitude Thursday Sept. 15, 2005, about 160 kilometers (99 miles) south of Golmud City, Qinghai Province, western China.

Track line will be finished by the end of Oct. 2005 with testing the entire lane beginning next year. The railway, which will officially open in 2007, will cross a mountain pass up to 5,072 meters (16,737 feet), making it the world's highest railway.
