December 2, China’s grain output increased to a record high of 571.21 million tonnes in 2011, up 4.5% on a yearly basis and the eighth consecutive year of increases, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Friday.
Yields of the country's 3 major crops -- rice, wheat and corn -- hit 510.45 million tonnes this year, the statement said.
Corn output added 8.2% year-on-year, which helped further the improvement in the country's grain production structure, the NBS statement said in a statement on its website.
The output of summer grain, early rice and autumn grain rose 2.5%, 4.5% and 5.1 % y-o-y, respectively, to 126.27 million tonnes, 32.76 million tonnes and 412.18 million tonnes this year, according to the statement.
The country's 13 major grain-producing regions, which grow 90.5% of the nation’s newly added grain, posted an annual increase of 5.4% to 434.22 million tonnes in 2011, the statement said.
The harvest was a result of the central government’s policy support, improvement of agricultural techs and proactive structure adjustment, the statement said.
