Peking, Yale universities' promotional videos arouse discussion

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhuanet) --The online comparison of two prestigious universities' promotional videos by a Chinese microblogger has led to heated debate on, the Beijing News reports.

The online post, uploaded by "Youchengtangmin", the ID tag of the internet user who posted the promotional movies of Peking University and Yale University over the weekend, has been reposted more than 14,000 times and has provoked thousands of comments.

Xu Wenguang, a microblogger, said that upon playing both videos to his five-year-old daughter, the Yale University video made his daughter dance with joy while the Peking University video made her fall asleep.

"wj_zm", another microblogger, commented that Peking University may not be inferior to Yale, but stressed that China's universities must decide what kind of college students they hope to cultivate.

Other microbloggers praised both videos, stating that Peking University's video represented the reserved manner of Chinese people, while the Yale video is more indicative of the outbursts of enthusiasm common with American culture.

Chen Yu, associate professor at the School of Arts at Peking University, and also director of the Peking promotional video, believes that the two short films cannot be compared to one another.

Chen believes that the videos are different in terms of style; Yale University's film aims to express a certain value system common in America - faster, higher and stronger, whereas Peking University intends to emphasize the historical importance of the institution, in the hope that it can be passed on from generation to generation.


Peking University's promotional video, which lasts more than 11 minutes, begins with a match lighting an oil lamp in a small room. The light goes through the room's window and radiates outwards, illuminating Peking University's historic locations.

"Why did you choose Yale?" is the name of Yale University's promotional video. The footage is presented in the form of a song and dance drama, and begins with a Q and A session between teachers and students. The video introduces the university's history of development, its campus facilities and Yale students' daily campus life.
