After a set of photos named “Real Scene Shooting in a Rice-line Factory in Dongguan” appalled Chinese web users, local authorities identified the factory as Tongcheng Rice Product Factory at Daojiao County of Dongguan city, Guangdong province. The factory has been ordered suspend business for rectification, reported Nandu News.
Photos called “Real Scene Shooting in a Rice-line Factory in Dongguan” first came in to the public’s attention at the night of June 6, 2014. In the pictures, rice line heaped on the ground, while staff workers stood on the rice lines with their bare feet, some even slept on the rice line heaps.
Rice lines in the photos were dubbed “Stinky Feet Rice Noodle” by netizens. Many suspected the local authorities dereliction of duty.
“Factories like this must be punished to bankruptcy”, a Weibo post said.
Food and Drug Bureau of Dongguan city identified the factory in the photo to be Tongcheng Rice Product Factory in the city’s Daojiao County after comparing the photos.
The person in charge of the factory said the pictures should be taken during a night shift around the Chinese New Year on February, 2014. He admitted they had loosened management on staff members due to the excessive work load by then.
He also said the workers in the photos are no longer working in the factory, and the workshop has been remodeled in the past several months. The factory had also carried out an emergent training of all its staff members on June 8.
Local authorities ordered the factory suspend production until it implemented all rectification measures. All rice line factories in the city were also told to self-investigate and self-rectify.
There are 15 rice line factories in Daojiao County in total, producing 800 – 1200 ton rice lines daily. Rice line sales of the county takes about 80% of the overall sales of the Pearl River Delta area.
