A murder case in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, in which the suspect killed three people, including his own daughter, has generated heated discussion online, with many suspecting it was an "honor killing."
Ma Ruibao, a Muslim Hui ethnic resident in Zhongning county, was arrested by local police on Wednesday after he murdered his daughter Ma Zhehua, her boyfriend surnamed Li, and a taxi driver who drove them to Ma's home, ycgbtv.cn, a news site affiliated with the government of Yinchuan, Ningxia, reported on Thursday.
Ma Ruibao confessed that he murdered his daughter and Li on April 15 because he was not "satisfied" with Li. After the killing, Ma and his son Ma Zeping buried the bodies and burned the car.
According to a notice issued by police in Qingtongxia, Ma killed the three due to family disputes, while many netizens doubted it was a case of "honor killing" because Ma Ruibao belonged to the Muslim Hui ethnic minority.
"The father killed his daughter because he found her boyfriend was not a Muslim? Typical honor killing," said Sina Weibo user. Honor killing is believed to be a justified means in some areas to punish a person who has brought shame to the family name.
However, Ding Liyu, a police officer from the Qingtongxia police bureau, told the Global Times that he did not know what an honor killing is and why it has anything to do with the murder.
