NANCHANG, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- More than 350,000 migratory birds have flocked to east China's Jiangxi Province for wintering in the Poyang Lake, the country's biggest freshwater lake, local authorities said Wednesday.

The data were provided by more than 10 monitoring stations in Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve, according to the reserve's administration bureau.

A total of 100 species of migratory birds, including 60 waterfowl species, were seen in the nature reserve from Nov. 21 to 30. Endangered birds such as oriental storks, white cranes and the Baer's pochards were also spotted, the bureau said.

Poyang Lake boasts an intact ecosystem and is an important wintering spot for waterfowl in Asia. The peak migration period for birds heading to the lake is from mid-December to early January of the following year.

Local authorities have launched annual joint law enforcement operations to crack down on illegal acts of damaging wetlands and hunting migratory birds to protect these species. Enditem
