BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Legal experts in recent interviews strongly denounced the so-called "primaries" devised and executed by a handful of persons in Hong Kong in July 2020.

When commenting on the recent arrest of the perpetrators by Hong Kong police, the experts said the so-called "primaries" were entirely illegal. They seriously disrupted and jeopardized the Hong Kong electoral system as well as its fairness and justice, and posed a threat to China's national security.

The anti-China saboteurs in Hong Kong attempted to use elections as a tool to instigate a "color revolution," said Tian Feilong, associate professor with the Law School of Beihang University.

Hong Kong's tainted electoral process resulted in electing some lawmakers who do not fully comprehend and pledge allegiance to the Basic Law, said Tian, adding that its dire consequences include prevalent filibustering and other malicious forms of confrontation on political occasions.

By attempting to manipulate elections at all levels, anti-China saboteurs in Hong Kong aim to infiltrate the local political system, so as to seize Hong Kong's jurisdiction at all fronts, said Li Xiaobing, a legal expert at Nankai University.

Should they succeed, Li warned, a "color revolution" will take shape, severely harming China's national security while delivering a destructive blow to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

When speaking of the intervention into Hong Kong electoral affairs by anti-China forces in certain Western countries, particularly in the United States, Tian emphasized their tactics of supporting agents and political groups in Hong Kong, radicalizing social movements and turning them into a "color revolution."

Li noted that Hong Kong's electoral affairs must be conducted in accordance with the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law.

To safeguard national security, loopholes in Hong Kong's electoral system must be closed so as not to be exploited by the anti-China saboteurs and external forces, said Li. Enditem
