BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Universal Pictures' new movie "F9: The Fast Saga" overtook Chinese hit drama "A Little Red Flower" on Monday to become the fourth highest grossing film at China's box office this year.

The newest entry in the Fast and Furious franchise saw its total ticket sales hit 1.2 billion yuan (about 188.4 million U.S. dollars) as of Monday evening, surpassing the 1.19 billion yuan generated by its competitor.

Since its release 10 days ago, "F9" has continued to lead China's daily box office chart, but is expected by box office tracker Maoyan to finish its China runs with just less than 1.4 billion yuan, much less than the previous two installments in the series scored in China.

Another foreign film in the top 10 earners at China's box office this year is U.S. movie "Godzilla vs Kong," which currently ranks third with a total revenue of 1.23 billion yuan.

China's 2021 box office earnings reached 25.46 billion yuan as of Monday, and eight of the yearly top 10 earners are domestic productions, data from the China Movie Data Information Network shows.

Chinese director Zhang Yimou's first spy film "Cliff Walkers" saw its total revenue cross the 1.1-billion-yuan mark on Sunday, claiming the sixth spot on the yearly sales chart. Enditem
