Grasp a vanishing Beijing

2009-11-05 10:41:56 GMT2009-11-05 18:41:56 (Beijing Time)  City Weekend

This guided tour takes you through the lesser-known areas of southern Beijing. See some of the city's original architecture before it's forever lost to the wrecking ball. Free.

The old Beijing was once commented by a British write “maybe the most beautiful city on earth”. Ever since Kubilai Khan’s time, old Beijing had been under construction. Every dynasty put in some best marbles to decorate this imperial capital. But a few decades ago, with the process of modernization, more and more historical blocks were torn down and give space to apartment and office buildings.

In this city walk tour, we will explore an area in southern city that is in the process of being torn down. It had been a historically rich area, many provincial union halls gather in this area. Significant historic events happened here. Such as the first initiation to transform China from a feudal empire to a modern country; Mao ZeDong also left his early political foot steps in this area. What should be preserved in this area? How could we balance economic development and cultural preservation?
