Though we’ve passed Shizi Shanxia (狮子山下) countless times, a recent hankering for Guangdong cuisine finally propelled us over the threshold. We couldn’t help but order the BBQ pork (蜜汁叉烧, ¥38) and staff-recommended roasted goose (至尊烧鹅, ¥58). The former was rather fatty, but the latter—paired with an orange sauce—proved a gamier alternative to the ubiquitous duck. The best dish was the house sautéed beef (狮子山下炒肥牛, ¥48), a delectable combination of tender beef slices, mushroom stems and celery in a light black pepper sauce. The soy sauce fried noodles (鼓油皇银芽炒面, ¥28) were typical Hong Kong fare, offering a satisfying starch to the meal. Overall, Shizi Shanxia offers standard Cantonese food and efficient service in a neighborhood starved for southern Chinese options.
