Artist Yorgos Papageorgiou explores his experiences living in China in his second solo show in the capital. His compositions blend warm colors and geometric shapes, and he incorporates old photographs he finds in local Beijing markets.
Some of Greek artist Yorgos Papageorgiou's compositions blend warm geometric colours with an assortment of collages made up of old photographs he finds as he wanders through the flea-markets of Beijing, and fragments of crumpled coloured paper scraps and calligraphy. In others, the almost casually chequered patterns that characterize his style can be reminiscent of Mondrian's work at times. But the play with collages brings us back to a reordering of emotions and subtle sensations, rather than a deliberate attempt at abstraction.
Yishu 8 is a hidden gem of an art and cultural space tucked away in a corner of a transformed cable factory. It nestles, with its charming Moon Gate, in the shadow of the CCTV Tower, at the very heart of Chaoyang central's emerging 'upper East side.' Open since 2009, this French-Chinese owned and operated art space has already hosted a number of successful exhibitions for established and emerging artists, both Chinese and foreign.
Yorgos Papageorgiou brings his own vision of living in China to Yishu 8 from Saturday, January 30 – March 22, with this, his second one-man show since he took up residence in Beijing in 2005.
