Indie Film Forum 42: Huan Huan

Moderator: Zhang Xianmin Guest: Song Chuan (director)

“The eponymous heroine of Song Chuan’s insightful and quietly heart-breaking Huan Huan (2010) is a young village woman who becomes the mistress of the local doctor; she struggles to find her place in the world despite, or because of, a near-constant bombardment of social messages (birth control regulations, labour force drives, state-controlled television news).”

—John Berra, www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk

Film synopsis: A young woman named Huan Huan resolves to leave her village in Yunnan and go to the city to find work. She has been having an affair with Wang Degang, the village’s married doctor. Huan Huan marries a man named Yue Lin. Not long after her wedding, Dr. Wang helps Huan Huan’s brother pay a 1500 RMB fine to the village family planning committee, thus clearing the way for the brother to return to the village. Huan Huan resumes her affair with Dr. Wang until one day, Yue Lin found out everything…
