THE prevalence of diabetes in women over 20 years old is now at 5.7 percent in Shenzhen, as the number of female diabetic patients is growing year by year, according to DT News.

Currently, there are over 120,000 diabetic patients in Shenzhen.

A report released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) notes that there are over 200 million female diabetics globally, and the number is expected to reach 300 million by 2040. Over 2.1 million women die of diabetes each year, while women with Type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than other women. If diabetes is not adequately controlled, a patient has a significantly higher risk of developing complications.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention launched a pilot project in five cities including Shenzhen to provide health education for diabetic patients.

Luohu District was chosen as a pilot district to carry out the project. The community clinics in the district will hand out brochures, host public lectures and use social media to help diabetics gain a better understanding of the disease. The patients are encouraged to get flu and pneumonia vaccines, which can prevent them from getting infections and reduce the fatality rate.

Patients are advised to eat a variety of healthy foods, including vegetables and whole grains. (Shenzhen Daily)
