The Palace Museum in Beijing will open a branch museum focusing on foreign antiques in Xiamen, an important city for the nation's Belt and Road initiative in East China's Fujian Province, on May 13, representatives said Sunday.

This will be the Palace Museum's first branch outside of Beijing.

The site of the former Hope Hospital and its adjoining nurses' residence, built by the American Reformed Church in 1989, will house the new museum.

The residence covers an area of 11,000 square meters with a floor space of 5,180 square meters.

The museum will feature a total of 219 exhibits, including paintings, enamelware, lacquerware and sculptures.

Dating from the 16th to 20th centuries, a majority of these items were gifts that overseas ambassadors presented to the rulers of China during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911), as such represent the close ties between China and the rest of the world.
