Europe makes up nearly one third of the top 100 most expensive cities in the world, a new survey has found.

But London placed 109th in the ranking based on cost of living, having dropped out of the top 100 last year for the first time in a decade.

Meanwhile cities in the UK and across the Eurozone jumped an average of 42 places in ECA International's cost of living survey for expats.

The survey compared a basket of like-for-like goods and services commonly purchased by employees on international assignments in 475 locations across the globe.

These included a cup of coffee, a litre of petrol and a bar of chocolate.

Caracas, Venezuela, was the most expensive city for expatriates, the survey found.

The rest of the top five was made up of Swiss cities, Zurich (2nd), Geneva (3rd), Basel (4th) and Bern (5th).

Some 18 additional European cities entered the top 100 thanks to the strength of the euro, the survey added.
