Dubai int'l film festival opens with "Life of Pi"

The 9th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) opened Sunday with "Life of Pi" and will have dozens world premieres in eight days.

The festival, which will run through Dec. 16, will show 161 films from 64 countries in 43 languages, among them 52 world premieres.

Besides the fantasy-based "Life of Pi" directed by Ang Lee, " Hitchcock", which stars Hollywood actors Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren about film director legend Alfred Hitchcock, will also celebrate its premiere at the Dubai film festival.

At the DIFF's Asia-Africa Gala, Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang will present his movie "1942", which deals with the devastating war between China and Japan at that time and its impact on civilians in the Chinese province of Henan.

Receptions, parties and public discussion rounds with film producers will also be held during the festival.
