Starting from 19:00 Jan 14 to 18:59 Jan 15,“Weibo Nignt” was mentioned 1,083,853 times by microbloggers on Sina Weibo, gaining the Chinese social media site a Guinness World Record for “Most mentions of an event on Weibo in 24 hours”.

Rowan Simons, Guinness president of Greater China region, presented the certificate to Wang Gaofei, CEO of SINA Weibo.

Starting from last year, Rowan Simons said, Guinness has been recognizing records set by Chinese social media. The ceremony is a good opportunity to showcase how to maximize the effect of an activity among users by challenging the records. In the future, Guinness hopes to have more in-depth and all-round cooperations with Weibo to witness more records.

“Weibo Night” has become an annual ceremony to review the hottest events and celebrities of the year. As a world-leading social media, SINA Weibo has become an indispensable platform for the general public to get first-hand information as well as share their opinions.

“Weibo Night” has, therefore, become the miniature of Chinese society. This year’s hottest issues range from entertainment and events to popularity and industries, which involve almost every aspect of the society. The topic “2014 SINA Weibo Night” has been read for 5.1billion times and discussed for 10 million times within a month’s time.

This record is the second Guinness World Record that Weibo has ever set. Last year, Chinese singer-actor Lu Han, former member of K-pop band EXO, joined Guinness World Record for having the “Most Comments on A Sina Weio Post”. The post set the record with 13,200,000 comments then, and the number now almost reaches 24 million.

Luhan’s record indicates the great influence that celebrities have on Weibo. This time the "Weibo Night"record indicates that, aside from following celebrities, the public also show great interest in commenting on hot social issues.

Altogether 12 awards were presented at the ceremony last night, with the most coveted awards “Weibo King” went to Lu Han and “Weibo Queen” went to Angelababy.
