Fit Lover (Aiqing Zuoyou) has a bit of everything, making it an ideal film for the upcoming Christmas and New Year: a pretty woman, 12 handsome guys, a funny angel and a series of courtship anecdotes.
The film, which premiered on Wednesday, focuses on a young lady's arduous and amusing search for her Mr Right after a kind angel gives her a magic car. She encounters 12 men with different jobs, including a policeman, artist, singer and writer. Every time she meets a man, something hilarious happens.
Reminiscent of Love Actually and Click, it's an attractive film by virtue of its pretty heroine and her equally cute 12 boyfriends. It sounds pleasant, too, thanks to its witty script and refined theme music.
Sweet-smiling Taiwan actress Karena Lam spearheads the cast and her 12 admirers are all A-listers from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, as well as Japan. The stellar cast will undoubtedly be a drawcard for many moviegoers but it is a double-edged sword. There are so many short relationships that the 110 minutes is not enough to do each of them justice. It might have better to focus on 4 or 5 of them.
As a film completed in two months, Fit Lover is a passable romantic comedy, something Chinese people need badly at the end of a tough year, beset by heavy snowstorms and a disastrous earthquake.
