Today she is all sinew, stretched skin and bottle-blonde hair. But 30 years ago, Madonna was . . . well, just like Lourdes.
The resemblance between mother and daughter is even more striking than usual in this picture, taken in 1979 when Madonna, now 50, was making a living as a dancer.
Her thick brown hair, strong brows and sleepy eyes have all been passed on to Lourdes, now 12.
This photo, along with several nude ones, was taken by Martin Schreiber, who paid Madonna just £21 ($30) to model for him.
He is exhibiting the pictures in the UK for the first time next month at Brighton's Impure Arts Gallery.
He says: In 1985, I hit the jackpot. Madonna was on the cover of Time magazine, and I had nude photos of The Madonna, a former model and brief girlfriend.
'After negotiating with Playboy and Penthouse I sold the photos to Playboy which were published in the 1985 September issue.
'With that success and money I stayed well afloat for the next 3 years.'
Meanwhile, Lourdes has enrolled at the New York drama school made famous by Macaulay Culkin, Scarlett Johansson and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The young Kabbalahist was approached a year ago to appear in the movie The Secret Life Of Bees - but turned down the part because her mother didn’t want her getting into the business so young.
Thanks to Madonna's youthful image and rapacious appetite for clothes, her little girl has access to a tweenager's dream of short shorts, grungy T-shirts, bright tights and quirky hats.
The mother of three's strict exercise regime means she can fit into the same clothes as her slim 12 year-old and Madonna has been keen to mould her daughter's dress sense for several years.
Lourdes is a veteran of the fashion and celebrity world and first appeared on stage with her mother at the MTV awards aged just eight - dressed in a costume inspired by Madonna's 1985 Virgin Tour.
Lourdes was born in October 1996, to Madonna and her trainer Carlos Leon, who became her lover after they met in Central Park.
