Kate Hudson was already slim – but to play a terminally ill woman in her new movie, she had to really sacrifice.

The star of Earthbound tells British Elle that she gave up alcohol in order to lose 20 lbs. to play a woman suffering from cancer.

"I love my glass of wine. I love tequila," Hudson tells the magazine in its December issue, on newsstands Nov. 4. "To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage! I'm not sure I've ever done that."

Hudson, 30, shows off her svelte figure in the magazine's photo spread, wearing a skimpy black swimsuit and black leather gloves in some pictures.

The actress, who has been the No. 1 fan for her boyfriend, Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, during the World Series, also opens up about her feelings about the opposite sex.

"I love boys," she says, "but I believe they're really simple. Every guy likes to say that they're complicated, but they're so easy to figure out."

In fact, she thinks that radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger sums it up perfectly. "What did that Dr. Laura say? Something like, 'All men want is sex and for you to make them a sandwich.' I thought that was really funny – and not entirely untrue."
