Expressways transport most passengers during peak travel season

BEIJING, Feb. 6(Xinhuanet)-- Expressways transport most of the people who visit home or travel during the peak travel season, the Ministry of Communications said here Sunday.

Chinese people traditionally return home to visit their parents during the Spring Festival, also called Chinese Lunar New Year. The holiday falls on Feb. 9 th

The country's expressways transported 55 million people Sunday and 200 million people over the past four days, the peak travel days before the upcoming holiday. Beijing launched 213 more buses Sunday than Saturday.

The 4,400 kilometers of expressways built in 2004 brought China's total to 34,200, second in the world. Vehicles can traverse east China's Zhejiang Province, which has 1,000 kilometers expressways, in four hours. Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, and Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, have all become centers which radiate expressways.
