Emcee Lin Chi-ling BEIJING, Nov. 14-- The 40th annual Golden Bell Awards for TV programming to honor excellence in terrestrial TV broadcasting were held in Taipei Saturday night.

The event was held in conjunction with an international film and TV exposition.

Most of The Golden Bells this year were awarded to dramas and serials, in contrast to previous years when variety shows dominated.

The authority spokesman Yao Wen-chih recently promoted Taiwan broadcasting industries, saying this is the first time that Taiwan has hosted an international film and TV exposition.

The authority intended to attract the interest of international buyers in the creativity of the local film and TV industries by combining Golden Bell Awards and Golden Horse Awards ceremonies with the exhibition of TV, film and digital content and products.

The Best Serial Drama this year was"Wave Washing Sands," which was set during Taiwan's Japanese Colonization period.

The serial, based on a true story, follows Taiwan's first female medical doctor Tsai Ah-hsin who roamed through different countries seeking her national identity.

TVBS host awarded Although TVBS was fined recently by the GIO NT$1 million for ownership violations, the network's anchorwoman and host Jang Yi-i managed to win an award for her cultural program"One Foot, One Step: Discovering New Formosa."

"It is important and great for the TVBS to win the award right now," she said," Our company always concentrates on programming about Taiwan's culture."

Best actress and Best

Actor Judges for awards this year tended to favor the nominated best serials set in the past over more modern period pieces.

"Love's Lone Flower" also a nominee serial drama, was adapted from Bai Sian-yong's novel, which focuses on a story about a lesbian in the 1940s.ˇ@

The serials"Marriage Bureau" and" Fei Fei in the House" were nominated for romantic and humorous plots.ˇ@

Fang Wen-lin, who won the best leading actress award in a drama, yesterday said she could not lead a normal life, because she was excessively devoted to her role in the Evil Scorpion."ˇ@

According to local media, two outstanding actresses, Anita Yuen from Hong Kong and Angelica Lee from Malaysia, failed to be nominated as leading actresses because they did not apply for work visas.ˇ@

Director Tsao Jui-yuan, a director of the"Love's Lone Flower," said it was pity that the two actresses in the serial could not compete with in the competion because of a Taiwan's regulations.ˇ@

For best variety show, most of the nominated programs have been broadcast for at least four years, while the explosion of talk shows failed to impress the judges.

The nominated list reflects that most judges' views are conservative and the newly produced programs are not welcome, local analysts said. Another controversy over the nominated best variety shows is that a lot of these programs were copied from Japan.

Senior host Chang Fei was nominated for his variety show"Big Brothers" once again.

At yesterday's ceremony, host Chang Fei and emcee Lin Chi-ling, chorused a song of"La Vie en Rose," which kicked off yesterday's Golden Bell Awards ceremony. Lin, whose dual roles are a top model and emcee, hosted the massive ceremony for the first time, just three months after she fell from horse in China and was seriously injured.ˇ@

Local rocker Wu Bai and his band China Blue performed"Lonely Tree, Lonely Bird." Wu then launched into a medley of Taiwanese songs.

In addition, Premier Frank Hsieh, accompanied with Yao, said the government planned to fund digital TV industries with billions of dollars.

Today, famous emcees Hu Gua and Patty Hou will emcee the Golden Horse Awards ceremony in the northern city of Keelung. The Golden Bell radio awards were handed out November 9th.ˇ@
