Beijing kids lead unhealthy lifestyles
2005-12-09 01:57:12 Xinhua English

BEIJING, Dec.9 (Xinhuanet) -- Myopia among Beijing kids has hiked from 6.73 percent to 14.69 percent in the 2001 to 2005 period, arousing concern among parents and teachers.

Myopia, decayed teeth, trachoma, anemia, ascariasis, and obesity are the top six diseases familiar to Beijing students, said doctor Chen from Beijing No.154 Middle School.

She said when she worked in the school two decades ago, myopia was very rare among junior middle school students. However, now almost 50 percent of grade one middle school students suffer from myopia.

"It's hard to find a student without myopia," said doctor Chen.

Li Yuxi, headmaster of Beijing Tuanjiehu No.3 middle school, said kids are suffering from more diseases due to their unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

She also called for the whole society to pay attention to the health of kids. Wang Min, vice-secretary general of the China Youth Development Foundation, suggests strengthening health education for kids and helping them nurture a healthy lifestyle.
