BEIJING, Jan. 11(Xinhuanet)-- Soul-searching drama,"A Charming Night," will open the 2006 box office of the National Theater Company of China(NTCC). The play, adapted from contemporary Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt's nouvelle"Dangerous Game" by Gong Yingtian, portrays a sales representative who joins a judicial game as he stays overnight in a retired lawyer's house. The sales representative is found guilty in his efforts toward business success by the retired lawyer and his friends-- a retired judge and a retired procurator-- in the simulative trial, and begins to interrogate himself. He ends up committing suicide while drunk. Director Wu Xiaojiang, a Durrenmatt fan who directed his tragicomedy"The Visit" in China in 2002, considered"A Charming Night" in season. "Who cares for our soul as everybody is dedicated to the scientific and economic progress? I hope this play supplies a reference to nowaday social changes," Wu said. "Durrenmatt excelled at accumulating the characters' inner conflicts to form drama, and then stirring the audiences' heart with philosophy and comedy," he said. "A Charming Night" casts both veteran and young actors, who will give performances at the Beijing Oriental Pioneer Theater affiliated to the NTCC from Jan. 13 to Feb. 5. Enditem
