PARIS, March 8(Xinhuanet)-- France's annual Asian Film Festival opened Wednesday in the chic French resort of Deauville, drawing world attention to Asian film makers who will present more than 40 movies at the four-day festival. The eighth edition of the festival, which features films from China, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore and Indonesia, comprises three separate sections:"Features,""Action Asia," and"Panorama." In the main competition section of"Features," four Chinese films--"Dam Street,""Blue Cha Cha,""Falling in Love," and"AV" will contend for the most coveted Golden Lotus award. Three movies by Hong Kong film makers--"Mob Sister,""One Night in Mongkok" and"The Myth," will compete against South Korean movies--"A Bittersweet Life" and"General of Heaven"-- in the"Action Asia" section. The festival paid tribute to Chinese director Chen Kaige, who was in Deauville for the screening of his latest feature"The Promise" which was also the opening film of the festival. "The Promise," which won warm applause at the opening, is a mythical epic set in ancient China featuring stunning special effects and a final message that through true love and honor destinies can be changed. Chen, best known to world audiences for his 1993 epic"FarewellMy Concubine," received a lotus statue and a medal from the Deauville mayor.
