LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- "The Break Up" starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn topped the box office this weekend, raking in estimated 38.1 million dollars for the romantic comedy, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

"The Break Up" debuted ahead of last week's blockbuster winner "X-Men: The Last Stand," which brought in about 34.4 million dollars, said the Los Angeles-based firm.

Last weekend, the "X-Men" shattered box office records by bringing in more than 122.8 million dollars, making it the largest Memorial Day debut ever.

Animated comedy "Over the Hedge" maintained its third place position with 20.6 million dollars, while "The Da Vinci Code" slipped from second to fourth place, bringing in about 19.3 million dollars. The popular book-turned-movie has brought in about 171.7 million dollars in North America over the last three weeks.

"Mission Impossible III" brought in about 4.7 million dollars over the weekend, bringing its total to 122.7 million.

The top 12 films this weekend grossed about 128.9 million dollars, up 1.6 percent over the same weekend last year, but this weekend's take was down 31.6 percent compared to Memorial Day weekend when the top 12 films grossed 188.3 million dollars.

According to Exhibitor Relations, "The Break Up" marks the second biggest commercial opening for Aniston and the third best for Vaughn.

The two actors reportedly fell in love while making the movie and speculation about their relationship is a top tabloid issue.

Aniston's most commercially successful movie opening is "Bruce Almighty," which opened with 68 million dollars in May, 2003, while Vaughn's best openings were "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," which opened with 72.1 million in May, 1997, and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which opened with 50.3 million in June, 2005.

In "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which stars Aniston's ex-husband Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Vaughn plays Pitt's best friend. Enditem
