BEIJING, July 7 (AP) -- Chinese veterinarians on Friday were treating a rare giant panda that suffered a skull fracture and other injuries in a fall in a ravine, state media said.

The panda was in critical condition at a rare animal center in the western province of Shaanxi, where tourists found it in a nature park last weekend, the Xinhua News Agency and state television said.

The animal also was suffering broken legs and chest injuries, Xinhua said.

"We are not able to perform surgery" due to lack of panda blood for transfusions, said veterinarian Ma Qingyi, quoted by Xinhua.

State television showed the panda lying on its side in a cage licking food from a spoon held by an attendant, and lapping up liquid from a plastic tube.

The panda is one of the world's rarest animals, with just 1,596 left in the wild, according to a 2002 government census.
