BATH, Britain, Sept.1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese portrait photographer unveiled his exhibition on Friday at the Royal Photographic Society in Bath, south Britain.

The "Wind from China" exhibition includes 30 photo images of Deng Wei,a portrait photographer known for his works of over 100 well-known politicians, artists and scientists, including presidents of the United States, many prime ministers, Nobel laureates, explorers and other international figures.

The exhibits cover his portraits of Chinese people -- an old lady and three monks from the Tibetan Plateau, late Chinese writer Xiao Jun and scholar Yu Pingbo, children from northern and southwestern China, as well as farmers from the western Loess Plateau.

Also on the month-long show are portraits of British sculptress Elizabeth Frink, Chinese-American physicist Chen Ning Yang, Canadian photographer Yousuf Kaarsh, late Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin, Norwegian explorer Liv Arnnesen and Zambian lawyer M. Chona.

"He not only is a portrait photographer who ranks amongst the best in the world, but his work embraces fine art photography, as well as photojournalism in color and monochrome," said Ralph Jacobson, president of the Royal Photographic Society.

In his foreword for Deng's exhibition catalogue, Jacobson writes: "Adopting dark colours and local light, he focused on his subject's faces at a particular moment, attempting to bring forth their inner world."

"He is a gifted photographer who is able to reveal the character of his subjects by the complete mastery of the key techniques of composition, lighting and the right moment."

Deng, a member of the 153-year-old Society, is the first photographer from the Chinese mainland to be awarded a Fellowship of the Society in 2004, the highest distinction.

Through the current exhibition, the Society wishes to make his work known in Britain. Enditem
