LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- "Gridiron Gang," about Los Angeles juvenile delinquents gaining confidence through football, topped the box office in a fairly lackluster weekend, according to estimates released on Sunday. The movie, made by the Sony Pictures, brought in about 15 million dollars to become Sony's 10th number one opener this year, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., which releases weekend estimates. Final figures for the weekend will be released on Monday. "The Black Dahlia," another Los Angeles-based movie, came in second this weekend, bringing in about 10.4 million dollars. The movie, based on true life Los Angeles stories, is about the unsolved murder of starlet Elizabeth Short. "Everyone's Hero," about a young boy who travels across the country during the 1932 World Series to return a baseball bat to Babe Ruth, debuted in third place with an estimated 6.2 million dollars. "The Last Kiss" debuted in fourth place with about 4.702 million dollars. The top four movies were all new releases. "The Covenant" was close behind with 4.7 million dollars in its second week in theaters. Rounding out the top twelve were: "Invincible," (3.9 million); "The Illusionist" (3.8 million); "Little Miss Sunshine" (3.4 million); "Hollywood land" (2.7 million); "Crank" (2.7 million); "The Protector"(2.5 million); "The Wicker Man" (2.1 million). For the second consecutive weekend, the top 12 films fared poorer than they did last year, collectively taking in about 62 million dollars compared to 70.6 million during the same weekend last year, a 12 percent drop.
