Golf course compulsory in Xiamen University
2006-10-17 02:33:36 Shenzhen Daily

BEIJING, Oct. 17 -- Xiamen University in Southeast China's Fujian Province will require some of its students to learn golf starting from the freshman class this year, China Youth Daily reported on Oct. 16.

Its golf range will debut on campus by the end of this year, university president Zhu Chongshi said Saturday during a forum in Jinan, Shandong Province. He said it would be the most beautiful golf range on the mainland.

Students from the university's business administration, law, economics and computer technology majors are required to take the course.

"The primary objective of higher education is to develop talents to meet the requirements of society," Zhu said. He insists on building a university with a relaxing study and research atmosphere and a beautiful campus environment because he believes "beauty will arouse confidence."

Zhu has arranged for many of the university's teachers to visit six most beautiful campuses in the United States to pick up ideas to use for Xiamen's campus.
