OTTAWA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Ottawa has drafted a bill to combat rampant movie piracy in Canada following some Hollywood company's decision to cancel preview screenings of their movies in Canadian theaters. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will inform visiting California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of the proposed legislation during their meeting Wednesday, according to local media reports. Recording a movie that is screening is not currently a criminal offense in Canada. Analysts say up to a quarter of illegally copied films originate from Canada. The Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association says movie pirating in Canada accounted for 20 percent of camcorded copies of DVDs worldwide. According to the American movie industry, Canadian bootleggers are costing the industry 6 billion U.S. dollars in lost revenue a year. In 2005, movie piracy cost the Canadian film industry 225 million U.S. dollars and the Canadian government 34 million U.S. dollars, according to a Motion Picture Association of America study. Earlier this month, Warner Brothers announced it would cancel all preview screenings of its summer blockbusters in Canada like "Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix" and "Ocean's 13." The bill is expected to pass middle next year.
