School recognizes girl who gave dad a kidney
2007-07-23 01:58:31 Shanghai Daily

SHANGHAI, July 23 -- A GIRL who gave one of her kidneys to save her dying father has been enrolled by a school in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

For her generosity, Cao Yuya was awarded 20 scores in the national university entrance exam to attain the required marks and was admitted by the Chengdu Textile Polytechnic College, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

Despite family opposition, Cao gave one of her kidneys to save her father on January 17, after he was diagnosed in November with uremia, a toxic condition resulting from kidney failure.

Cao was an excellent student at her school in Guang'an City of Sichuan Province, but did not do very well in the national university entrance exam because she missed many lessons to care for her father, school sources said.

The Chengdu Textile Polytechnic College has also exempted Cao from three years' tuition fees because her family needs to repay money borrowed for her father's surgery, according to college Vice President Yun Ximing.
