SHANGHAI, July 31 -- SOUTH China's Guangzhou City is unifying its English traffic signs, the local-based Nanfang City News said today. The city's government has established an expert panel to regulate English printed on traffic signs, which are now a "total mess." Two signs on the same road may have two English versions, said 11 city's People's Congress deputies, who also are part of the campaign. "If we keep the signs, it would be a puzzling experience for non-Chinese-speaking drivers and tourists," one of the deputies' said. The city's public security department told the newspaper that the expert team was established in September. The team will decide what English words can be used on the signs, the department said. Several government departments presently have the right to do so, it said. Beijing's traffic authority has adopted English on its traffic signs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ring roads by the end of last year.
