2007-08-13 01:51:33 Shanghai Daily

SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 -- A MAN drifted on a rubber raft along the Yangtze River from Chongqing to Shanghai to show his support for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The 41-year-old Hubei native finished his journey at 1:20pm today when he went to shore at Seagull Place restaurant on Riverside Avenue in Pudong New Area.

He claimed he departed from Chongqing on July 1. He said he used two bamboo paddles to row about eight or nine hours a day along the Yangtze.

His humble raft, equipped with rubber tires and a washbasin, had two flags ˇV one for China, the other for the Olympics ˇV flapping proudly in the breeze. His raft's slogan read: "The first drift along the Yangtze River to welcome the Olympic Games."

A witness said he saw the man on the Jungong Road stretch of the Huangpu River around 11:30am.

The maritime authority reportedly stopped the man near the Lanzhou Road stretch and then sent him to his destination on a patrol boat.
