SHANGHAI radio is about to enter the digital era as it prepares to launch and test new services in audio and data formats by the end of November, Eastday.com reported yesterday. Shanghai Media Group, the only local broadcasting media operator, said yesterday that it has obtained permission for the trial run from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the national broadcasting watchdog. The new digital radio receiver, unveiled yesterday at a press conference, resembles a GPS navigator. Besides receiving high quality programs, it can also provide instant traffic information to help motorists avoid congestion. Real-time weather forecasts and emergency announcements are also available from the device. It can display audio and video programs on a terminal screen, the report said. Digital audio and data broadcasting is known as the third generation of broadcasting technology. The digital audio broadcasting technology will transcend the limits of traditional radio and provide services in multimedia formats including audio, video and data, said Wang Jianqiang, the vice president of SMG. The report didn't reveal the gadget's price or when it will go on sale. At the initial stage of the test run, radio service will incorporate programs from China Radio International, the largest English radio station in China, and local news and traffic radio channels, Wang added.
