Chinese Film Week staged in Tokyo

TOKYO, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Film Week curtained up here on Sunday as a special section of the 20th Tokyo International Film Festival, carrying the festival organizer's greeting to the 35th anniversary of the normalization of ties between Japan and China.

The opening ceremony of the China week was held at central Tokyo's Shibuya Culture Village. The appearance of famous Chinese movie stars Chen Kun and Fan Bingbing aroused a gust of craze in the cinema hall.

Chen said the films to be shown during the week reflect beautiful lives and diversified cultures in China. Fan in her part expressed good wishes for the strengthening of cooperation between Chinese and Japanese film industries.

Ren Zhonglun, president of Shanghai film corporation and head of the Chinese delegation to the Tokyo film festival, said in his speech that to watch film is a kind of direct way to understand and know more about a foreign country. He hopes that the Japanese audience like Chinese movies and like Chinese artists related with the film industry.

More than 300 movies around the world are to be shown on the 8-day 20th Tokyo International Film Festival which opened Saturday. A total of 15 films are candidates for the main Tokyo Sakura GrandPrix and other awards under such themes as "Winds of Asia" and "Tokyo in Focus."

Results of the competition will be announce on the closing day of the festival by the jury, which was headed by U.S. film producer Alan Ladd Jr.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to its motherland, festival organizer has also arranged a special section for films from Hong Kong. Four outstanding Hong Kong movies are to be shown during the 4-day section starting Tuesday.
